Playleaders

At Willingdon Primary School, we aim to encourage physical activity, as we value the positive impact that it can have on both physical and mental health. The children already have two hours of Physical Education (P.E), but we want to also use the time during lunch times to inspire children to be more active and engage in sports.

As part of this ambition, the school nominates children to be our ‘Play Leaders’. The play leaders go over to the EYFS, Year 1/2 & Year 3/4 playgrounds once a week during lunch (30 minutes) and run small games which develop skills such as passing, dribbling and throwing. These games also encourage the younger children to communicate, co-operate and become more confident in sports.

To support the play leaders, Willingdon Community School students provide training on how to run sessions competently. The play leaders also have termly meetings with Mr Henderson to discuss what has gone well and what support they need.
